For whom?
- for children with difficulties with concentration, emotional control and behavior,
- for children with muscle tone disorders: hypotonia or hypertonia,
- for children with too low or too high arousal levels,
- for children with coordination and balance disorders,
- for children with motor planning disorders,
- for children with fatigue, reluctant to engage in physical activity,
- for children with hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity to stimuli,
- for children with developmental disorders,
- for children with autism spectrum disorders.
Water happiness
- The well-being of our swimmers in the water environment is our foundation.
- We build on this to develop further swimming skills, enriching them with extensive sensory stimulation.
Our Philosophy of Water Work
- Building water happiness.
- Providing appropriate support and encouragement for the Swimmer.
- Giving the Swimmer a sense of security at every stage.
- Focusing on building independence.
- Individual approach.
- Looking for possibilities, not limitations arising from disability.
- Following the Swimmer's breath and body rhythm.
- Acceptance and motivation.
- Being present in the moment, paying attention to the Swimmer's needs.
Hallwick Concept 10 Point Program
- Mental Adjustment – being able to respond appropriately to a different environment, situation or task. The learning of breath control is an important aspect of this work.
- Disengagement – an ongoing process throughout the learning by which the swimmer becomes physically and mentally independent.
- Transversal Rotation Control (formerly Vertical Rotation) – the ability to control any rotation made about a fronto-transversal axis.
- Sagittal Rotation Control – the ability to control any rotation made about a sagittotransversal (anterior/posterior) axis.
- Longitudinal Rotation Control (formerly Lateral Rotation) – the ability to control any rotation made about a sagitto-frontal (longitudinal) axis.
- Combined Rotation Control – the ability to control any combination of rotations.
- Upthrust – trusting the water will support you. Sometimes called ‘mental inversion’ (because the swimmer must invert their thinking and realise they will float and not sink).
- Balance in stillness – floating still and relaxed in the water. This is dependent on both mental and physical balance control. When balanced, other activities can be performed more easily.
- Turbulent Gliding – a floating swimmer is moved through the water by an instructor without any physical contact between them. The swimmer has to control unwanted rotations but makes no propulsive movements.
- Simple Progression and Basic Swimming Stroke – the development from simple propulsive movements made by the swimmer to a stroke which may be individual to each swimmer.
Organizational Matters
- Water therapy sessions are conducted individually.
- The swimmer participates in the sessions with a therapist-instructor. The child's parent/guardian does not enter the water.
- Sessions last 45 minutes.
- Before the first water session, we discuss the swimmer's profile and needs over the phone, setting the rules for the sessions and the date of the first meeting.
- Price list: one-time entry: 200 PLN, 10-session card valid for 5 months: 1800 PLN
- The founder of the Activity Swimming School, Kasia Kostańska, is responsible for the methodological supervision of the sessions and the development of the therapy plan. Kasia is a Master of Physiotherapy and a certified sensory integration therapist.
- The sessions are conducted by swimming coaches and instructors, graduates of the Halliwick Concept course, experienced in working with children with special needs.
